Happiness — something that we are all looking for yet remains elusive for many. While it is impossible to eliminate adversity from our lives, there are a number of things we can do to be happier in general. If you are seeking to live a happier life, try these 5 steps to create change in pursuit of happiness.

Define What Happiness Means To You

Begin by defining what happiness means to you. In an ideal world, what would your life look like? What things bring a smile to your face? What do you think you need to be truly happy? This definition will guide the actions you need to take to create a happy life.

Identify and Remove Obstacles

Once you know what happiness looks like for you, you can identify the things that are in the way of you living your best life. What are the things stopping you from being happy? Is there something holding you back? Are there things in your way? Identify what these things are and label them. Then make a plan of how you are going to deal with these things and remove them from your life.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Resentment and jealousy are surefire ways to limit happiness. It’s time to stop comparing yourself to others and do what makes you happy. Forget about everyone else and who has the newest car or the skinniest body. Are these even things that matter to you? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, remind yourself of what makes you happy and focus on that.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a great way to improve focus, aid in relaxation and reduce negative emotions. All of these things lead to a happier life. Try incorporating it into your regular routine and making it a habit. There are a range of exercise and apps that can be used, even for beginners. Essentially, mindfulness brings us into the present and stops our thoughts from wandering to the future and what might be.

Practice Gratitude

There is always something to be grateful for. Rather than focusing on the things you don’t have or the bad things in your life, train your brain to focus on what’s good. Practicing gratitude regularly makes us happier as we are able to acknowledge all the good things in our life that we should appreciate.
